Grammar · A2 · Futur

Futur: werden & Präsens + time

Formal future: Ich werde morgen lernen. Often Germans just use present + time: Morgen fahre ich nach Hause.

Bridges

EN will / going to

PT futuro (ir / vou + infinitivo)

ES futuro (voy a / futuro simple)

FR futur (aller + infinitif)

Forms: Two ways to talk about the future

  • .

    I will call you.

    werden + infinitive

  • .

    Tomorrow I'm going home.

present + time word (very natural)

  • .

Next week I have an appointment.

Präsens + time often beats Futur I

Forms: werden

  • I will

PT eu vou / irei · ES voy a / haré · FR je vais / ferai

  • you will

PT tu vais · ES vas a · FR tu vas

  • /

    he/she will

    PT ele/ela vai · ES va a · FR il/elle va

  • we will

PT nós vamos · ES vamos a · FR nous allons

  • you (formal) will

PT o senhor vai · ES usted va a · FR vous allez

    Präsens + near-future time

  • ?

    Will you be there tomorrow?

Common mistakes

  • *Morgen ich werde gehen* — wrong order; use Morgen gehe ich or Ich werde gehen.
  • Overusing werden when Präsens + time sounds more native.
  • Confusing werden (future / become) with bekommen (receive).
  • Putting the infinitive before werden (*Ich anrufen werde*).

When you use it in Berlin

Plans: Morgen fahre ich nach Prenzlauer Berg. Ich werde Sie anrufen. Nächste Woche habe ich einen Termin.
